4.Mart.1967de Istanbul'da doğan Erkan Umut, Görüntü Yönetmeni ve İstanbul Üniversitesi ile Yıldız Teknik Üniversitesi Öğretim Görevlisidir.

 

Japon (Tokiwa Co., Ltd., Tokyo), Çin (Tianjin Cineprojector Factory, Tianjin) ve Çek Cumhuriyeti (Meopta prerov a.s., Prerov) sinema makineleri imalatçılarının Türkiye deneme mümessili olarak hizmet verdi.

 

Dirlik Film ve mastermovie firmalarında (Istanbul) Teknik Danışman ve Uluslararası İlişkiler Yöneticisi olarak çalıştı. 

 

Orta okul yıllarından itibaren (yak. 1979) kendini amatör film gösterimi, film çekimleri ve film cihazlarına adadı.  Amatör film  katalogları ve amatör cihazların broşürlerini biriktirmeye başladı.  Sürekli arıza yapan, CINE MAX K5 (Super8) basit bir plastik sessiz film oynatıcısı, ona sinemanın temelini keşfetmesinde yardımcı oldu. İlk kamerası bir LOMO 216 (Super8) idi.

 

Lise yıllarında ailesinin mühendis veya doktor olmasını ısrar etmesine rağmen kameraman olmaya karar verdi. Bu onun profesyonel film yapımı ve cihazları ile ilgilenmeye başladığı dönemdir.  Aynı zamanda profesyonel cihazlarla ilgili broşürler biriktirmeye başladı.

 

İlkin hassasiyet mühendisliği okuyarak sinema mühendisi olmak istedi, ama sonraları içindeki sanat duyguları ağır bastığından fotografçılık okumaya karar verdi. 1988de Mimar Sinan Üniversitesi, G.S.F., Fotograf A.S.D.'ından mezun oldu. Prof. Dr. Yılmaz Kaini (Fotograf Optiği), Prof. Dr. Ahmet Öner GEZGİN (Deneysel Fotografi), Prof. Sabit Kalfagil (Belgesel Fotografi) ve Prof. Reha Günay (Mimari Fotografi)'dan dersler aldı.

 

Kısa bir süre kamera asistanlığı, doli ve ses operatörlüğü yaptıktan sonra kameraman olarak birçok klip, reklam ve belgesel projelerinde çalıştı. Vatani görevi sırasında (1989-1990) kameraman olarak hizmet verdi ve birçok askeri eğitim filmleri çekerek TSK Takdir Belgesi aldı.

 

Barış Manço ile 7den 77ye TV programının şef kameramanlığını üstlendi ve 50 ülkeden fazla yerde bulundu.

 

İlk klibini 35mm filme çekmesine rağmen, kliplerin sadece TV ekranlarında gösterildiğinden yola çıkarak,  Türkiye'de klip sektörünü 35mmden 16mmye döndüren ilk kameramanlardan biridir, böylelikle eski 16mm kameralar modern modellerle yer değiştirmiş ve çeşitli 16mm ham film bulunur hale gelmiştir.

 

1979dan beri sinema, ses ve fotograf teknolojisi, teknikleri, cihazları ve malzemeleri ile  ilgili teknik dökümanlarla aynı zamanda bu cihazlardan kolleksiyon yapmaktadır. İstanbul Üniversitesi İletişim Galerisi'nin sinema bölümünde müze kuratörlüğü görevi üstlenmiştir.

 

Sinema teknolojisi ile ilgili birçok şirket ve müzeleri ziyaret etmiştir ve  Society of Motion Picture and TV Engineers, New York (SMPTE - Sinema ve TV Mühendisleri Derneği) aktif üyeliği yapmıştır. Teknik dergilerde makaleleri (özellikle eski Sovyet, Japon ve Çin sinema teknolojileri, şirketleri ve cihazlarıyla ilgili) yayınlanmaktadır ve bazılarını kendi tasarladığı  web siteleri için bilgi kaynakları temin etmiştir.

 

Brief information:


Born on March 04, 1967 in Istanbul, Erkan Umut is a Turkish Cinematographer (Director of Photography - DoP) and Professor at the Istanbul University and at the Yıldız Technical University.

He was a trial representative for sound projector manufacturers in Japan (Tokiwa Co., Ltd., Tokyo), China (Tianjin Cineprojector Factory, Tianjin) and the Czech Republic (Meopta prerov a.s., Prerov).
 
He served as a Technical Consultant and International Relations Manager at the Dirlik Film and mastermovie companies (Istanbul).

Since early school years (ca. 1979) he has dedicated himself to home movies, cinematography and motion-picture equipment. He began to collect catalogues of home movies and brochures on amateur equipment. Projecting home movies with a simple plastic silent projector CINE MAX K5 (Super8) - which always gave him trouble - leading him to explore the cinematographic process. His first camera was a LOMO 216 (Super8).

In high school, despite his family's insistence that he earn a degree on engineering or medicine, he decided to become a cameraman. It was during this time that he transitioned to being interested in professional filmmaking and equipment. At the same time he began to collect brochures on professional equipment.

At first, he wanted to become a motion-picture engineer by studying precision engineering, but then he decided to study photography as he had come to appreciate his artistic ability. In 1988 he graduated from the Department of Photography at the Mimar Sinan University, Faculty of Fine Arts in Istanbul. He was lectured by the professors Prof. Yılmaz Kaini, Ph.D. (Photographic Optics),  Prof. Ahmet Öner GEZGİN, Ph.D. (Experimental Photography), Prof. Sabit Kalfagil (Documentary Photography) and Prof. Reha Günay (Architectural Photography).

After a very short time as a camera assistant, dolly and sound operator period he began to act as a cameraman, and worked for many music video, commercial and documentary projects. During his military service (1989-1990) he worked as a cameraman and shot some military educational films, which have gained him official recognation by the TSK - Türk Silahlı Kuvvetleri (Turkish Armed Forces).

He was the senior cameraman for Turkey’s longest running and most popular TV show project "Barış Manço ile 7den 77ye" ("from 7 to 77 with Barış Manço") which featured the famous Turkish pop singer Barış Manço and has been in more than 50 countries.

Although his first music video was shot on 35mm film, he was the first DoP in Turkey to lead the music video industry to convert from 35mm to 16mm, which is more fitting to broadcast televisions limited resolution. After that, older 16mm cameras are replaced by the most advanced ones, and a wide variety of 16mm film stock became available in Turkey.

He has been a collector of technical documents (*) on motion-picture, audio and photographic technology, techniques, equipment and materials in many languages, as well as equipment since 1979. He is the curator of motion-picture equipment for the Communications Gallery at the Istanbul University.

He visited many companies and museums dealing with motion-picture technology, and was an active member of the Society of Motion Picture and TV Engineers, New York (SMPTE). He has published technical papers for Journals (especially on the ex-Soviet, Japanese and Chinese motion-picture technology, companies and equipment), and has provided informational resources for web sites, some of which he created himself.
